A neck issue or stiffness is a very common condition that most people experience at some point in their lives. Initially, it may come from sleeping in an awkward position, and may only last for a day or two, so we tend to ignore it. However, neck pain can fast become a chronic condition. If it lasts too long it can become very frustrating and, if not treated early enough, may even become debilitating – so much so that we are unable to turn our heads without severe pain. This makes driving impossible. When pain becomes this severe it is difficult to do most of our favorite hobbies like reading or knitting as well.
When someone is experiencing neck pain or discomfort, they should seek medical treatment. Physical Therapy can reduce neck pain, stiffness, tightness, and improve ROM (range of motion), increase strength and stability, improve posture and mechanics through manual therapy and can open up the joint space and reduce spinal nerve impingement (when a nerve in the neck becomes compressed or irritated.
Why do people experience neck pain?
- Poor posture
- Improper mechanics and/or body position
- Muscles weakness and/or tightness
- Acute or chronic injury/illness
- Surgery
If a neck issue or pain continues to be ignored and is left untreated, it can have a serious negative impact on daily living activities and overall quality of life. Pain, stiffness, decreased mobility and loss of range of motion, strength and function all can lead to your inability to enjoy cooking, writing and even getting a good night’s sleep.
When a nerve root is impinged in the neck it can decrease motor function in the upper extremities, such as picking something up off the floor or raising your arms to put away the dishes.
Symptoms of neck pain that should be treated include:
- Stiff neck
- Sharp pain
- General soreness
- Tingling, numbness, or weakness
- Headaches
- Trouble with lifting/gripping
Don’t wait until your neck pain takes away your ability to enjoy your life.
