Preventing Sports Injuries 101
Exercise and fitness are important for all ages, and create dramatic changes in your overall health and well being. However, it is important for all levels of athletes and non-athletes to have proper warm-ups, stretches, and conditioning, in order to prevent injury. Too often, sports-related injuries occur and injury could have been easily prevented had the athlete thoroughly prepared their body for practices and games.
So what is an appropriate warm-up?
The warm-up, which typically lasts between 10-15 minutes, feeds the body.

Agility: the ability to move quickly and easily. When you think about the definition, ask yourself “Which sports don’t involve agility?” The answer: NONE!
From golf to swimming to synchronized diving to football to skiing to rugby, every athlete must conquer the concept of agility. Imagine a wrestler who has a significant amount of strength, but doesn’t move easily or quickly. Now imagine that same wrestler, moving faster and using less effort to overcome his opponent.
The Pros and Cons of Playing Multiple Sports

Many people, parents and coaches in particular, believe that the earlier a child specializes in one sport, the greater their chances are to reach the elite level. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), 480,000 out of 8 million (6%) of high school athletes move on to compete at the collegiate level, with roughly 3% being offered an athletic scholarship. Early specialization used to be believed as a key factor is succeeding at the elite level, but that opinion has been debunked.

Preventing and Treating Sports Injuries
Sports injuries are typically defined as injuries to the musculoskeletal system, including muscles, bones, and tissues such as ligaments, tendons and cartilage.
For many young athletes, the most common injuries occur due to acute trauma or overuse of a joint. Acute trauma is an injury that occurs due to force from a fall or tackle and is usually more easily identified when the injury occurs. There is immediate sharp pain and swelling and it usually leads to a trip to the Emergency room.
