Ever stepped off a curb incorrectly?
Have you ever “rolled” your ankle? Chances are that you have, because what is commonly referred to as a “rolled ankle” or ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries that people experience. Once an ankle is sprained the chances that someone will sprain it again are raised dramatically. Fortunately there are steps that you can take in order to get back on your feet.
First let’s talk about what happens when you “roll” your ankle.

Knee pain/injures are one of the most common injuries we see at Loudoun Sports Therapy Center. Whether they are caused from a sports/weekend warrior traumatic injury or muscular weakness/imbalances. Three of the most common ailments related to the knee are arthritis, meniscus injury, and patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS).
Common Causes of Knee Injuries
- Traumatic contact injury
- Twisting on a planted foot
- Normal ageing
- Muscular weakness
- Poor mechanics

Knee arthritis can occur from a previous injury to the joint or normal wear and tear over your lifespan.

Hip problems make daily activities like simply walking difficult and painful. When you talk to your physical therapist or doctor about your hip pain, it’s important to be able to describe exactly where your pain is located. This helps confirm that your hip is actually the problem. It’s not uncommon for us to hear a patient say ‘my hip hurts’ and then once we’ve done a full evaluation of their area of pain, we find they actually are having a back-related problem.

In general, stretching is the elongation of a muscle and is used to help prevent injury and discomfort. However, there are different types of stretching that are important to distinguish. Whether you have thought about participating in one or are a seasoned race pro, you may have heard the term “weekend warrior” come up. So what is a weekend warrior? This is a person who doesn’t consistently exercise or train during the week or in the off-season, but can be found competing in races, hiking, or playing in sporting events on the weekends.

Why do knee problems occur in the first place? In order to fully understand knee problems, you need to know a little about the makeup of the knee joint. The knee joint is the junction of two major bones of your knee fitting together to form a hinge joint, like a door. The major difference between the hinge of a door and your knee joint is the way it is made. Your knee joint is made by the junction between the femur (your upper leg bone) and your tibia (your big lower leg bone).

What is bursitis and how do I know if I have it?
Bursitis is an inflammation of a structure called a “bursa” and most commonly occurs in knees, hips, shoulders and elbows. Pain is the number one symptom of bursitis. This pain can be deep and hard to pinpoint. It is often described as “dull and achey,” and can radiate to the surrounding areas. Bursitis can impede on nearly all aspects of our everyday activities, including standing up from the couch, running on the treadmill, walking the dog, or even something as simple as lying down in bed… that shouldn’t hurt, right?!

What exactly is patellofemoral pain? Patellofemoral pain is a general term used to describe pain that resides in the front of the knee and around the kneecap, also known as the patella. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, PFPS, is also known as both runners’ and jumpers’ knee due to the type of athletes who commonly complain of the problem. Based on the nicknames of PFPS, most people tend to believe that it can only occur in athletes or those who participate in high intensity sports, however it can also occur in the older and more sedentary populations.
Problems in the body’s largest ball and socket joint

The hip is the largest ball and socket joint in the human body. The joint consists of the head of the femur articulating with the rim of the pelvis, with a ring of cartilage (the labrum) sitting between the two bones. When functioning properly, the hip joint allows us to move our legs smoothly in many different directions. However, if something is disrupting the hip, these motions can become very painful, making activities such as walking, running, or even standing difficult.
