As we get older exercise remains a very important thing to keep up with not just for our physical health, but also for our well being. I often hear or get asked about what exercises are appropriate to do because they are worried about pain or doing exercises that may worsen current comorbidities. Here is a general guideline of safe and easy ways to stay active.
- If you are just starting a new exercise routine, you should always consult your physician first especially if you have chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiac, neurologic, and/or autoimmune disorders.
- Once cleared, start low impact like walking or swimming if it is available to you. If it’s nice outside go for a short walk of about 15-20 minutes, and if it’s not then hit the mall early in the morning when it’s not busy. Swimming is also ideal because the water provides buoyancy which eliminates the force of gravity on your body and makes exercise easier.
The other reason why people aren’t motivated to exercise and be active is because of boredom. I often hear how boring it is to walk on a treadmill, or that it’s not engaging enough.
- Find an exercise buddy! Ask a friend or neighbor to do the activity with you. Not only will it keep you accountable, but the time will fly by as you catch up chit chatting.
- Do you like to dance? There are many exercise programs available that incorporate dance moves to make it more fun.
There are also other options available to you if you are worried about starting to exercise. Many retirement communities as well as community centers offer yoga and tai chi classes. Many are also offering these virtually to do in the comfort of your own home. Not only will these get you moving and keep you active at a more comfortable pace, but they also help with balance which is a concern as we get older.
Still not sure? Worried about some pain you may be having and are not confident on beginning a new program on your own? Come see a physical therapist! We can get you on a program to address the pain you are having and work towards getting you to the point where you can exercise on your own afterwards!
