WHAT IS SCIATICA?
Sciatica is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the back, down to the foot. This means, sciatica can cause pain in your back, buttocks, hamstring, calf, shin, or foot depending on where the nerve is irritated.
Sciatica can also be a referred pain from levels L4-S2 sending pain signals to the body parts they innervate in the same regions as listed above. It can be caused by a pinched nerve, disc herniations, or stenosis at the spine.
MAIN SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH SCIATICA ARE:
- Numbness/tingling/burning in the leg
- Weakness in the leg
- Pain in the back, buttocks, leg, or foot
WHAT CAN PHYSICAL THERAPY DO FOR SCIATICA?
Physical therapy can help to determine the true cause of your pain in
order to resolve the problem at its source, not just fix your symptoms.
It can help to regain any strength loss or range of motion loss as a result of the sciatica.
Physical therapy can help you get rid of your pain and most importantly help you return to your normal life again with confidence and knowledge of how to keep your body safe and healthy. It will help prevent the problem from reoccurring.
If left untreated for a prolonged period of time, sciatica can result in permanent strength and/or sensory loss in the legs. At LSTC we treat patients with sciatica frequently, and can help you too! Give us a call to set up an evaluation.
