Posture is something that we hear about all the time and it’s usually followed by “oh, I have terrible posture”.
Postural weakness in the neck is a problem many of us struggle with. We spend a lot of time sitting whether it is at a desk or on a couch and 9 times out of 10 we are looking down at some kind of a screen. This is the number one reason we have postural weakness. Looking down or slouching for long periods of time causes the small muscles in our neck and upper back to go into overdrive and work harder than they should be. It also puts more pressure and stress on the joints and discs in our neck.
What causes postural weakness in the neck?
- Poor desk ergonomics
- Looking down for prolonged periods of time
- Weak muscles in the neck and upper and mid back
- Tight muscles in the front of the chest and shoulder
What are the symptoms?
- Muscle fatigue
- Pain or achiness in the neck and/or upper back
- Weakness in your neck, upper back and/or arms
- Headaches
- Numbness/Tingling into your arms, hands, fingers
How can I fix this?
It is important to address postural weakness so that it does not progress over time. The increase of stress on the muscles as well as on the joints and discs in the neck can lead to bigger problems down the line. With the help of physical therapy, we will:
- Strengthen your postural muscles
- Stretch your tight muscles
- Use hands on techniques to mobilize joints & create space between your joints to help resolve your symptoms and keep you sitting and standing taller.
