  • What is physical therapy?

We often hear the question, what is physical therapy

Loduoun Sports Therapy Center, Sterling VA

Physical Therapy is specialized care that helps you relieve pain, restore movement, and recover from an injury, illness, or condition.

When receiving physical therapy you have the opportunity to recover from painful conditions and injuries without addictive medications or surgery.

A recent study showed that many people had a misconception when asked “what is physical therapy?” Most people thought it was massage and modalities like heat, electrical stimulation and ultrasound.

But physical therapy is so much more than that and it is often misunderstood by physicians and chiropractors. Physical therapy is a specialty just like a surgeon or a neurologist. The difference? Physical therapists are required to understand, diagnose, and treat all conditions and injuries. When you see a physical therapist you will have a much better chance at quickly and cost effectively discovering the cause of your condition or injury.

Your physical therapist is a specialist in the body’s movement and function. Physical therapists are highly trained in all orthopedic and neurological conditions.

At LSTC, you will receive care from highly skilled clinicians who have a strong desire to help you recover. Your clinicians are all movement specialists who work with orthopedic injuries and conditions as well as sports-related injuries. After your private one-on-one evaluation you will receive a full assessment of your movement patterns, strength, & range of motion. The physical therapist will identify the cause of your pain and design a plan to eliminate it.

While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, at LSTC you will work with a physical therapist who will use a variety of manual therapy techniques, exercise, and patient education during your treatments. The overall goal is to restore pain-free mobility and function and to prevent your injury or pain from recurring. Because we understand that each patient is different, you will receive a plan of care that is individualized to your specific condition and goals.

You don’t have to wait to relieve your pain. You don’t have to take addictive medications or have very expensive tests.  Call 703-450-4300 today to schedule your evaluation.

  • How do I know if physical therapy can help me?
If you are suffering from a painful injury or condition, then chances are that physical therapy can help you.

If you ask a physical therapist if physical therapy can help, they will answer with an immediate ‘yes’.

Physical therapy is a specialty that helps you recover from injury, illness, and painful conditions. You can find out how physical therapy can help by scheduling an evaluation.

During your private one-on-one session, the physical therapist will help determine the cause of your pain and work with you to develop a plan based on your goals and needs.

There are 4 phases of recovery that you must go through. Phase one is focused on decreasing inflammation and pain. It can last from days to several weeks depending on your needs.  When you complete phase one you are not done with your care.

Phase two focuses on improving your range of motion. During phase two the therapist will perform manual techniques and stretching to increase joint motion. Phase two can 2 -4 weeks to advance through based on how tight the joint structures are.

Phase three focuses on strengthening. This is the most important part of your care and you should not stop physical therapy before this phase is complete. During phase three, your therapist will work on activities to increase your overall strength during functional activities. It is very important that you complete this part of your care.

Phase four is advanced training. This is when the physical therapist or athletic trainer advances your program into more activity or sport-specific training. If you are an athlete, phase four will help you return to your sport and be ready to play.

Don’t suffer with pain or injury. Call 703-450-4300 today to schedule your one-on-one evaluation. Physical therapy can help!

  • Where should I go for physical therapy?
As a patient you have the right to decide where you want to go for physical therapy. That’s right, the choice is yours to make.

Choosing where you go for physical therapy may seem like a difficult task. Here are some simple things to remember when you are choosing where you will go for physical therapy:

    • Make sure wherever you go for physical therapy that they take your insurance.

Make sure that you check with the provider before scheduling an appointment. If they do not take your plan for physical therapy services, you could end up with a very steep bill at the end of your care.

We have seen patients who went to other practices, including physician owner PT practices that didn’t take their insurance plan for physical therapy. They are required to tell you that they don’t take your plan and have you sign a form stating you understood. This can get caught up in all the other paperwork you are signing and you don’t find out until you no owe hundreds of dollars.

    • If they say they take your insurance, check to see if they in-network or out-of-network with your plan.

Out-of-network benefits will cost you more than in-network benefits, so finding a physical therapy practice is in-network with your health insurance is a better option for you financially.

Again, it is very important that you ask this question before making an appointment for physical therapy. There are many good choices that take your benefits and you should not have to pay extra for good care.

    • Find out if they offer what you are looking for.
    • Look at distance from home and work.

How far will you have to travel for your care and is it necessary to go that far? In some cases the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience of the extra travel time. A great clinic that is out for your best interests will serve you better and make it worth your time.

    • Look at who is referring you to a specific physical therapy practice.

If a friend referred you they likely had a good experience. Your friend has nothing to gain from giving you their opinion.

On the flip side, take care when you receive a physicians referral. In Northern Virginia most physicians own their own physical therapy practices. When they refer you to their practice, they have something to gain.

    • Make sure they will fight for you and your needs.

Health insurance companies have made it more difficult to get all the care you need. Many insurance plans, like Aetna and United Healthcare, have plans that require authorization.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours to make. We want you to be able to make the best choice for you so you get the best care possible.

At Loudoun Sports Therapy Center in Sterling VA, you will receive the highest quality of care while achieving the results you need.
