Weakness in the knee is a common problem for every age group and one we treat often at Loudoun Sports Therapy Center.
Symptoms
Our patients typically report:
- Pain in the front of the knee
- Pain with prolonged standing
- Pain with walking or running
- Pain when they are getting out of the car or rotating/twisting the knee
These symptoms often cause the patient to have difficulty performing everyday tasks due to their limitation in motion, strength and pain.
What is General Weakness in the Knee?
Weakness is caused by a lack of strength or an imbalance of muscles supporting the knee joint. The most common muscles that are lacking strength include the quadriceps (front of the thigh), hamstrings (back of the thigh), glutes (buttocks) and calfs (back of the shin).
If knee weakness isn’t addressed through strengthening, then it can develop into a more severe problem such as:
- Tendonitis
- Arthritis
- Tears in the meniscus (cushioning structure in the knee joint)
- Muscle strains
- Ligament tears
The good news is we are experienced in strengthening the knee and the appropriate exercises to help avoid further injury. A physical therapist can identify where your weaknesses are and prescribe an exercise program to improve strength, mobility and help relieve your pain.
What to Expect from Physical Therapy:
- Detailed Evaluation
- Education on your injury/pain
- Massage/deep tissue therapy
- Detailed instruction from professionals on stretches and exercises to improve flexibility, strength and posture/gait.
- A home exercise program that includes stretches and strengthening exercises
