It’s a beautiful time of year to be outside with the color change in the leaves, the vibrant blue sky, and the crisp autumn air. What better way to enjoy it than going for a hike!
Here are some tips for enjoying your outdoor adventure while also avoiding injury…
Wear good sneakers or hiking boots
- Protecting and supporting your feet can help reduce the risk of problems in your knees, hips and back too
- If your walking/hiking shoes or boots are a few years old and worn out, look at getting a new pair
Pick your trail difficulty carefully
- Exploring a mountain trail can be exciting, but if you haven’t hiked in a while or are used to only walking on level/paved paths it can lead to injuries. It is important to start small with an easier trail and work up to a more challenging hike.
Stretch your calves, quads, and hamstrings
- These muscles frequently get tight when we sit a lot and they work hard for us when we hike. Show them some love by stretching them before and after your hike!
Drink a lot of water
- Water is a vital ingredient needed for making your muscles and nerves work, so make sure you drink a lot of water during and after your hike to help keep your muscles happy and avoid cramping
