Golf is a sport that requires complete full body movements that are not always the same for the average golfer. With a golf swing you will use everything from lower body movement up to mild rotation of the neck. If you have any imbalances throughout the body whether it’s involving strength differences or mobility impairments it can start to affect other areas of the body to try and compensate for these imbalances.
Some common injuries that arise with golfer are:
- Lower back pain
- Rotator cuff injury
- Medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow)
- Wrist injuries
- Knee injuries
Why Do Injuries Occur?
There are a lot of rotational movements completed throughout the motion of the golf swing that are not symmetrical. These motions require the use of one side of the body more than the other which can cause strain on these common areas of injury. Another reason injuries occur is because we do not prep the body appropriately through warming up. When the muscles in our body are not prepared appropriately this is where we see a lot of compensations that put us at risk for injury.
The Role of Physical Therapy in Treating a Golf Injury
Physical therapy can help strengthen these possible imbalances to decrease the risk of a golf injury. It also can help to get you back onto the course doing the thing you love following an injury. A LSTC we go through a comprehensive evaluation to look at movement patterns, range of motion restrictions, strength deficits and more to create a comprehensive plan of care. this plan of care aims to; correct mechanics, improve strength, stability, and range of motion.
