Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition in the shoulder that causes the capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint to become inflamed and freeze up causing pain and loss of mobility.
What Causes Frozen Shoulder?
- Inflammation to the joint capsule or surrounding soft tissue structures
- Injury or trauma causing lack of movement of the joint
- Random onset
What are the symptoms of frozen shoulder?
There are 3 stages to frozen shoulder:
1. The Freezing Stage: This stage can last for 6 weeks to 9 months. It is most common to notice increased pain on the shoulder and loss of motion in the shoulder.
2. The Frozen Stage: This stage can last for 2-6 months. You may notice that the pain levels will decrease but the shoulder mobility is very limited.
3. The Thawing Stage: This stage can last for 6 months to 2 years. The pain levels will continue to decrease, and the shoulder mobility and strength will return.
