Foot and ankle injuries are common across all populations. Whether you’ve stepped wrong off a curb, slipped in the shower, have trouble standing for more than a few minutes, or have noticed a structural issue physical therapy can help fix the problem. We’ve seen it all when it comes to foot and ankle injuries. A few of the most common are:
Common Injuries to the Foot
- Plantar fasciitis
- Fascia on the bottom of the foot becomes tight. Tightness on the bottom of the foot and pain taking first steps in the morning.
- Fractures and stress fractures
- Occur from contact and non-contact. Can occur in any of the 26 bones that make up the foot.
- Neuroma/radiculopathy
- Neural involvement. Can present as numbness/tingling in the foot or between toes.
- Heel Spurs
- Bone growths caused by calcification along the bottom/back of the foot. Can cause pain when walking and wearing shoes.
- Bunions
- The big toe points in toward the others which can cause long-term issues. These can be painful.
Common Injuries to the Ankle
- Ankle sprains/strains
- Result from contact or non-contact forces. Ligaments/tendons can tear or rupture.
- Fractures
- Tibia, fibula, and other bones of the foot make up the ankle joint and can become fractured.
- Achilles Tendon Tear/Rupture
- A tear in the Achilles tendon prevents proper ambulation. A pop is often felt when a tear occurs.
Why do I need physical therapy for a foot or ankle injury?
Injuries to the foot or ankle can cause further injuries throughout the body if not treated. When an ankle or foot is injured, we’re more likely to begin to limp or change the way we normally walk to prevent the pain we’re feeling from occurring. Doing this could cause knee, hip, or back issues if the original injury is not addressed.
If you’re suffering from any type of foot/ankle pain, want to be able to tolerate standing for longer periods of time, or are trying to prevent any foot or ankle injuries, give us a call at 703-450-4300 to schedule an evaluation with one of our physical therapists.
