Two common knee conditions we treat at Loudoun Sports Therapy Center are ACL tears and subsequent repairs as well as quad tendon tears and subsequent repairs.
What is the ACL? The ACL is made up of dense fibrous connective tissue that supports the front of the knee joint.

Knee Arthritis is a very common condition that we treat here at Loudoun Sports Therapy. What you might not realize is that knee arthritis impacts every age group. It presents itself with a number of symptoms including pain, limited range of motion, weakness, swelling and difficulty performing daily and functional activities. Keep IT Band Syndrome from Slowing Down Runs

You’ve probably heard of IT Band syndrome. But what is it exactly? Let’s start with the name. The ‘IT’ refers to the iliotibial band that runs along the outer portion of the thigh. What exactly is arthritis? Arthritis is a degenerative joint condition that occurs overtime. As we use our joints throughout our lifetime, we get a lot of wear and tear on them. Arthritis is that wearing down of the cartilage and once that cushioning layer is gone, our bones will rub on other bones.

We often don’t think about how much we move our knee joints in a day but when we are experiencing knee pain, we become more aware of how much we are moving. Knee problems and injuries are common reasons patients come to physical therapy. The number one complaint we hear from someone experiencing any kind of knee problem is pain under or around the knee cap. As you can imagine, this kind of pain can greatly limit your functional mobility. Some people also experience stiffness in and around the knee making it difficult to move the joint. Others also have generalized weakness in that same leg. Any kind of knee pain or stiffness makes simple daily activities difficult:
- Walking
- Going up or down the stairs
- Squatting
- Trouble standing up from a chair
- Inability to kneel.
Three Common Knee Problems and What Physical Therapy Can Do
Knee injuries are one of the most common injuries that we see in physical therapy, whether it’s due to a sports-related injury or due to degenerative changes that occur as we age. Some of the most common knee injuries include:
- Sprains and strains
- Osteoarthritis
- Ligament injuries
- Meniscus injuries
All of these cause pain, weakness and a decrease in functional activities.

The number one complaint for knee patients is pain that is under or around the knee cap. This pain can greatly limit your functional mobility. Some people also experience stiffness in and around the knee causing difficulty moving the joint and generalized weakness in the affected leg. Having pain or stiffness in your knee can cause quite a few problems:
- Difficulty walking
- Pain going up or down the stairs
- Pain squatting
- Difficulty standing up from a chair
- Inability to kneel
Most likely you will also have trouble lifting, pushing or pulling objects.
