Back pain is a very common issue that we see amongst the everyday population. However sometimes your back pain might not be because of an actual back problem. Your hips and pelvis can have a direct impact into the various stresses and strains in your lower back. This is due to pelvic misalignments, lack of hip mobility, weakness throughout the hips, and tight hamstrings or hip flexors.
This causes compensations throughout the lower back and causes different compressive forces to go through the low back. This results in the pain that you may be experiencing.
What are some symptoms?
Some common symptoms that you can have are; having lower back pain while having limited range of motion with hips (such as not being able to reach a deep squat). Other symptoms that might show are that you also have hip pain along with lower back, or if the pain lessens with laying flat or in a seated position.
When do I know it is time to go to Physical Therapy?
You should see the help of a physical therapist when your lower back pain does not get better with general exercises, when you have had any imaging done that done not show specific spinal issues, when you are having difficulty during your normal activities of daily living, or if it is something that just started and you don’t want it to get worse
What specific conditions could it possibly be?
There are various other medical conditions that could show similar symptoms: herniated disc or bulging discs, lumbar radiculopathy that causes radiating pain into the hips, lower crossed syndrome, lower back strain.
During a comprehensive eval with one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy we will dive into what the exact cause of your back pain is whether it is truly stemming from your lower back or if it is the result of a compensation through a different area. After going through an evaluation your Physical therapist will devise a plan of care based on the current situation to get you back to the activities you wish to get back into.
