Tendonitis and bursitis can restrict you from heading to your weekly tennis or racquetball games, carrying your groceries to the car, and exercising. Baseball pitchers can develop tendonitis in the muscles in the shoulder from throwing pitches with poor mechanics. A parent may develop tendonitis from repeatedly lifting their child with similarly poor shoulder mechanics.
Tendonitis and bursitis are inflammatory issues that can appear anywhere in the body there is a joint such as the elbow, knee, shoulder and hip.
Tendonitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon, the portion of a muscle that connects the muscles to a bone. Tendonitis in an area typically develops due to the following:
- Repetitive actions
- Performing motions with poor mechanics
- Performing a strenuous task without necessary strength and stability to do so safely
Bursitis is the inflammation of the structures called bursa. The bursa is a thin, fluid-filled sac that lines points of friction throughout the body. It’s located between bones within joints, between bones and skin, around muscles and ligaments and at other points of potential friction in the body. While bursitis can develop for the same reasons as tendonitis, it can also arise when there is an infection or condition such as arthritis. For example, elderly individuals often develop bursitis of the hip because their muscles weaken and their arthritis hip joint no longer moves the way it should.
Both tendonitis and bursitis can be extremely painful, and very debilitating. Waiting to address these issues can further sideline you from playing your favorite sports, exercising or taking care of daily chores around the house and yard. For this reason, you will want to seek therapeutic attention as soon as possible.
**** Physical Therapy can address and help to alleviate the painful symtoms and prevent them from returning.****
Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication or cortisone injections, to help manage your pain and symptoms. However, these treatments fail to address the initial cause of the condition.
Physical Therapy can actually address the cause and help to eliminate the painful symptoms of both of these conditions and prevent them from returning and from becoming a permanent issue. Most frequently, the cause is weakness of one or several muscles or poor mechanics.
