If you are anything like me, I like to hibernate during the winter months and stay put inside and away from the cold weather. While staying at home, it can be easy to fall into the trap of staying on the couch and watching movies, sitting at your desk, and doing extra work or basically anything but exercise. Does this sound like you? Below we will discuss how to make moving and doing exercises fun even in the coldest of months or while you are staying home.
So how much exercise do you really need?
According to the CDC, children ages 6-17 should get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity exercise per day; and adults should be achieving a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise per week. Both numbers sound intense and like a lot of exercise, but if you break it down and look at the big picture it’s not so bad!!
For children, 60 minutes does not need to be done all at once and can be broken up throughout the day – there are 24 hours in a day, and they only need ONE of those hours to get some movement and exercise in!
For adults, the minimum of exercise is 150 minutes per week. This can be broken down into 30 minutes of exercise 5x a week or whatever works best for your busy schedule.
Now that we determined how much exercise you should be getting… what can you do?!
Go for a walk.
Now, I know we just said it was cold outside… But walking can be done inside on a treadmill, go to your local mall and do a few laps or just bundle up on a day that isn’t too windy and go outside and take in the beauty of the snow on all of the trees.
Dance it out.
Just like the old saying, just dance like nobody’s watching. Whether you like to dance and can bust a move on your own with your favorite song on or need a little boost with a workout video on to walk you through the moves. No matter what, this can be a really fun way to get your heart rate up and get your exercise minutes in!
Make the most of your TV time.
Do you want to get the most bang for your buck while exercising and catching up on the new Netflix shows? Try getting on a stationary bike, elliptical or treadmill while you are watching your shows or you can do squats and planks while the commercials are on!
Yoga.
If you work a stressful job and just need some time to unwind after a long day, yoga can be a great exercise. There are many different variations of yoga from beginning to more advanced yoga classes that can be done both in person at studios or can be done online by a quick YouTube search.
