Lateral Epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow is a commonly seen injury in physical therapy. This injury impacts the outside or lateral part of the elbow and can be very painful for those suffering from it. This injury can impact all ages and all activity levels, not only athletes.
Causes:
Lateral Epicondylitis is an overuse injury. It is caused by performing repetitive actions or vigorous actions that cause an inflammation of the muscle tendons on the outside of the elbow. These muscles are responsible for extending the wrist. People who play tennis, pickleball, paint, stir, or perform any repetitive wrist or elbow movement are at risk. With the overuse, the tendons can become inflamed and if continued, can cause microtears to the tendons. Lateral Epicondylitis can also become a problem when a new activity is started and is performed for an extended period of time.
Symptoms:
- Mild swelling or increased muscle tightness to the muscles near the outside of the elbow
- Pain with wrist or elbow movements
- Limited motion with elbow movement and/or wrist movement
