Defining Osteoarthritis
You’ve probably heard the word ‘osteoarthritis’ but what exactly does it mean and what are the symptoms?
Osteoarthritis:
- Joint inflammation that causes pain and stiffness
- It is progressive
- There is no cure for arthritis. (You can’t reverse the damage)
- Wear and tear of cartilage is continuous and worsens over time.
- Treatment: “Motion is Lotion” (stretching and strengthening)
Osteoarthritis is caused by progressive degeneration and wearing down of your articular cartilage over time which means there is less cushioning between your joints.

What is the IT Band?

The IT band is the abbreviation for the iliotibial band. This band is an extension of your hip muscles. It is a long band of connective tissue or fascia that runs down the outside of your thigh from your hip to just below your knee.

At some point or another in life we experience joint stiffness. This is a situation in the body where we feel tightness in the parts of our body that bend like; the elbows, wrists, shoulders, hips, knees, neck, lower back, and ankles.
Common Causes of Joint Stiffness:
- muscular tightness
- capsular/ligamentous tightness
- muscle weakness causing poor joint alignment and tracking
- loss of joint space with osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis
- structural damage from wear and tear or injury and the resulting inflammation
How Joint Stiffness Affects Us
Joint stiffness presents with the sensation of not being able to fully rotate, bend, or extend a joint in the body.

Achilles tendonitis is a very common condition that we treat here at Loudoun Sports Therapy and it affects every age group. Achilles tendonitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon in your foot. When a patient is suffering from this condition, they will most commonly complain of problems such as pain, limited range of motion, weakness and swelling. They often have difficulty performing daily and functional activities such as ascending or descending stairs, walking, running and pain at night; this pain is due to the inflammation that causes the calf muscles to weaken.
The Active Person’s Answer to Living Life Pain Free
A lot of times when we feel pain, we immediately try to be our own doctor and figure out what to do for that pain. Sound familiar? Maybe you take some Tylenol or use an ice back on that sore muscle or maybe you just try stretching for a bit. It makes sense to try and find the fix. Life is busy between work, kids’ schedules, maybe you have vacation or race coming up and you want to be able to enjoy it without pain.
