3 Back Injuries You Can Experience
The back is comprised of the spine (24 vertebrae), nerves, and many muscles that help us function every day. There are many injuries that affect these structures and could lead to back pain and altered function.
Common Injuries:
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal which puts pressure on the surrounding structures.
- Mechanism (cause):
- Degeneration caused by age
- Congenital
- Signs/Symptoms:
- Numbness/Tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Pain with walking or standing for long periods of time
- Mechanism (cause):
- Herniated Disc: A condition where the inside of a vertebral disc protrudes out into the spinal canal.
Tips to Avoid These Three Common Back Injuries

Herniated/bulging disc:
This injury commonly occurs with an increased load from bending forward such as lifting or pushing a heavy object, falling, or sitting for a long period of time. The best way to avoid a herniated disc is:
- To follow proper lifting mechanics
- Build up good core strength
Core strength is associated with the deep abdominal muscles and muscles surrounding the hip or glutes.

Are you feeling:

- Stiffness and limit motion
- Swelling
- Inability to maintain positions
- Muscle spasms
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you may be dealing with a lumbar strain. A lumbar strain is when the muscles or tendons in the back get overstretched or tear. Microscopic tearing can occur suddenly due to injury or develop overtime. Strains are classified into varying degrees based on the severity of the injury.
